Shell EP MarVel™

Shell EP MarVel Shell EP MarVel (Marine Vessel) is a global web-accessible database of vessels for Shell's Exploration and Production (EP) division.

MarVel is designed to coordinate vessel and owner/operator audit and inspection information for the diversity of boats and ships contracted for oil and gas exploration, drilling, pumping, and transport.

In 2005, Navarik and the Shell Group created Shell EP MarVel as a web-based application for Shell to evaluate a variety of vessels used for oil and has exploration and production.

As part of its exploration and production operations around the world, Shell operates or contracts thousands of vessels both small and large, including tugs, supply vessels, emergency response and rescue boats, barges, seismic vessels, icebreakers, crew transports, and accommodation vessels. With MarVel, Shell users can create, view, and update audit and inspection information about all of those vessels globally, to ensure that they meet all safety and regulatory requirements—both local government regulations and Shell's own stringent standards—and to avoid unnecessary and costly duplicate audits and inspections for vessels that may move from one jurisdiction to another.

Like Shell CoBRA, MarVel replaces a number of EP vessel audit and inspection systems that were not coordinated with each other—which made it difficult to determine whether and when Shell had inspected, audited, or worked with a particular vessel or owner/operator, especially in another part of the world, and whether a vessel had received its required annual technical and HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) inspections. The MarVel database includes information about vessel construction, technical specifications, charter and use history, owner/operator audits, and HSE inspections.

Applying consistent quality and safety standards

EP MarVel screenshotShell applies industry-leading standards for vessel safety, quality, management, and environmental impact to vessels and owner/operators it hires, promoting sound practices for the entire petroleum industry. Included as part of the Shell Group's general business principles is a statement that all of its companies "conduct their activities in such a way as to take foremost account of the health and safety of their employees and of other persons, and to give proper regard to the conservation of the environment."

The MarVel system allows Shell staff to ensure that EP vessels meet international and national regulations, as well as industry standards and Shell's own requirements. The system allows vessel inspectors assigned by Shell to securely upload their reports and results directly into MarVel from any Internet-connected computer as soon as they are ready, as well as to add historical audit and inspection results for comparison and historical reference—which any other authorized Shell user can then immediately access from anywhere else in the world.

Worldwide permissions-based access, built-in security

MarVel provides an easy-to-understand, colour-coded summary of a vessel's audit and inspection results, so Shell staff can see at a glance whether it meets requirements, and whether its owner/operator has made improvements since the last inspection or audit. Detailed information is available throughout the application with a click. Different types of Shell users have different access to the system, from read-only viewing of vessel particulars and current charters to full read-write access to rating histories and incident reports.

As with Shell Navarik, CoBRA, and other systems, Navarik provides Shell with full hosting and maintenance for MarVel at a top-tier web hosting facility, which ensures that the MarVel application and global database remain available for users in any of Shell's regions at all times.

Navarik has been working with Shell since 2003. Together, we have designed, built, and launched several web-based software systems—which Navarik now runs and maintains for Shell—to capture, process, and share vessel and voyage information. MarVel and CoBRA both augment Shell's other monitoring and evaluation systems for tankers and other large transport ships.
