Navarik's Port Log Writer application helps simplify information exchange between Navarik's systems and other data processing software in the maritime shipping industry. The Port Log Writer and related XML Document Type Definition (DTD) specifications are available free from Navarik User Services.
The Port Log Writer is a free stand-alone application for Windows systems (Windows 98/Me/2000/XP) that gives shipping professionals the flexibility to enter Port Log events without an Internet connection, then insert them into the appropriate Navarik web-based application using Extensible Markup Language (XML) once they return to an Internet-connected computer.
At this initial stage, the XML data captured using the Port Log Writer requires users to log in later to Navarik systems and import their information manually, but Navarik is working with some of our customers to fully automate the data exchange in the near future.
The Port Log Writer and XML DTD are an early part of Navarik's overall effort to help shipping professionals worldwide more efficiently integrate and automate business processes, and synchronize data between IT systems.
At the core of this process is Navarik's commitment to use open Internet standards for data storage and exchange, by using Extensible Markup Language (XML) and other open data exchange protocols. Navarik's XML data exchange technologies are already in use by some of the world's largest bulk shipping companies, and by the agents, inspectors, and other firms they work with.
An obvious benefit is that our users can reduce data entry errors by eliminating the need to re-enter data when moving it between unconnected systems. Providing users with the flexibility to enter data offline helps to ensure complete information is captured, even when no Internet connection is available.
