Vessel Screening System™
The Vessel Screening System (VSS) is a web-based application, originally developed by Navarik for Petro-Canada and now available to other shipping companies, that lets authorized vessel owners, operators, or their authorized representatives electronically submit vessel or tug and barge questionnaires and supporting documentation.
Now shippers and charterers can verify and approve vessels for their voyages, and vessel owners can track the progress of their applications online.
Centralizing and streamlining vessel screening
The Vessel Screening System (VSS) was first developed when Petro-Canada worked with Navarik in 2004, so that third-party companies could use the web to offer their vessels electronically for Petro-Canada to hire. Vessel owners or operators (or their approved representatives) can submit tanker or tug/barge questionnaires and supporting documentation, so that shippers like Petro-Canada can verify and approve vessels—also using the same web-based system.
Companies that hire vessels—instead of or in addition to owning their own ships—usually have strict criteria for those vessels to meet. Each vessel must be evaluated from a series of questionnaires before it can be accepted for hire. The VSS both simplifies the questionnaire-submission process—which often now takes place using forms submitted by email or fax, then processed manually—and also ensures that the data collected is accurate and complete.

Like other Navarik software, the VSS operates over the Internet, and uses open data standards, so vessel owners and operators can sign in securely and submit screening questionnaries from nearly any Internet-connected computer with a standard web browser, anywhere in the world. They can also monitor the progress of their application, and see the results online.
The Vessel Screening System helps shipping companies and their suppliers save time, money, and effort in the vessel screening process, and also creates a reliable trail of information to monitor vessel performance, scheduling, and accounting.
